What is water retention?
Fluid retention is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in certain parts of our body. It manifests itself by swelling of the tissues (edema). Water retention occurs when the body stores more water than it releases.
What causes water retention?
The causes of water retention are multiple: poor hydration, high heat, a diet rich in salt, hormonal imbalance, poor circulation, etc.
Let’s not forget to mention stress. Indeed, in times of stress, the body reacts by increasing its production of cortisol or stress hormone. This hormone allows the body to adapt to stress. But at a high rate, the latter directly affects the water balance of the body and water retention sets in.
How to reduce your cortisol level in the event of stress in order to limit water intake?
To reduce the level of cortisol, It is important
- To practice regular physical activity
- To use relaxation techniques such as meditation or sophrology
- Limit the consumption of caffeine and simple sugars
Plants are also a good alternative for managing stress and therefore reducing cortisol. I am thinking in particular of rhodiola, a plant that you find in food supplements at the diet counter.
Rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb allowing you to cope with stressful situations. It helps the body adapt to emotional and physical stress.
It is found in two food supplements (d’tendu and zenitu’2 30).
In zenitu’2 30, it is associated with pilosella, a plant that promotes the elimination of water.
